König Ludwig Dunkel

On Christmas day, in a effort to escape the cold, and snow, I headed to a nice small bar terrace located on the roof of the Stein Hotel, Salzburg. From an uninspiring beer menu I ordered a bottle of König Ludwig Dunkel which appeared to be the only non mega swill available.
Anyhow, König Ludwig Dunkel is a delicious, dark bottom-fermented lager. It's Bavarian, hence Reinheitsgebot-brewed. I have actually had this gem in Munich before and could not really remember much about it. The beer has a deep chestnut colour and a slightly-sweetish, a burnt wheat flavour, and a nice clean finish.

Oh, and did I mention that I had a white Christmas... A first for this Aussie.

Tim,
I am wondering if this is the same brewer who makes the Konig Pilsner which I have been happily sipping in the blazing sun on the beach at Phillip Island the last three days. The stuff we get is (I think) like a 'made for supermarket-homebrand' kind of line which sits at about $13 for a six when most other imports and premiums are generally around $17-$20.
cheers,
Prof Pilsner

Hi Prof. Pils.
Konig is German for King and as far as I know the Konig ludwig brewery is a small Bavarian number. More info can be found here. How does the cheap Pilsner go? Is it passable or in a similar mould to Amsterdam Mariner or dutch brewed Bavaria?

König Pilsener (reviewed by me here) is made near Düsseldorf and is very much in the stoic northern German style, rather than the meaty sweety wheaty Bavarian König Ludwig.

König Ludwig's owner, Prince Luitpold of Bavaria, is delightfully bonkers. Apparently he applies for a tent at Wies'n each year, and is refused, and once walked from his brewery to the festival grounds carrying two litres of his beer in protest. He was arrested for affray on arrival.

Thanks lads,

Tim - I reckon the K Pils is well on par with both Bavaria and Mariner in that they are very drinkable and honest, if not challenging and classically smooth. The price makes them very good value for money.

Beer Nut - havr enjoyed your blog postings and the bonus history lessons along the way make it all the better!

Cheers
